Bladen Wing

The Spaces & Places guided walking tour explores the history of locations on and around the UTSC campus by sharing the personal recollections of members of our campus community — reflecting a variety of perspectives, positions, and points in time.

The Bladen Wing (BV), originally known as the Recreation or “R” Wing and later renamed in honour of University of Toronto Professor Vincent W. Bladen, opened in 1973. It initially housed classrooms, office spaces, a gymnasium, sports facility, and a fine arts studio, but has since scaled back on these spaces and now primarily contains classrooms and study spaces for students. The Wing is perhaps best known for its walls of lockers and bulletin board displays, which many have remarked give the space a markedly “high school” feeling; indeed, this feeling is further amplified by the steady stream of student traffic through the space at all times of day. However, these aspects of the Wing also allow it to serve as a functional space, where students can exchange books, grab a quick snack, or catch up with friends between lectures. The energy and movement in the space throughout the day make the Bladen Wing a central artery of campus life, buzzing with the rhythm of various academic and social activities.
