Resources
Our project is invested in a network of institutional and community resources; we have particularly benefited from the research support of archivists and librarians at the University of Toronto Scarborough Archives, the University of Toronto Scarborough Digital Scholarship Unit, UTARMS, and the University of Toronto libraries. Below are a variety of resources related to campus initiatives, exhibits, and departments, archival research, and oral history methodology. If you are interested in the work we do, we encourage you to explore these resources.
Oral History Resources
Scarborough Oral Histories Collection
Digital Scholarship Unit, University of Toronto Scarborough Library
This is the online repository for our Stories of UTSC oral history collection, as well as oral histories collected through course-based initiatives and special projects.
Oral History Collection on Student Activism
University of Toronto Archives and Records Management Services
From their website: The Oral History Collection on Student Activism is a set of seventeen oral history interviews focused on illuminating the impact of student action and initiatives across UofT’s three campuses. The interviews are the result of a UTARMS project established in 2019 and cover a range of themes including community building and mentorship, institutional response, and the deep personal and educational value drawn from commitments to systemic change.
The Queer Peel Oral History Project
University of Toronto Mississauga
From their website: The Queer Peel Oral History Project is a student-driven initiative that emerged from a 3rd year history course at the University of Toronto, Mississauga, in early 2020. In this exhibition you will discover 25 oral history interviews with LGBTQ2+ activists, students, alums, and residents of the Peel region.
Multicultural History Society of Ontario
Oral Testimony Collection & Oral History Museum
901 Lawrence Ave W, Toronto ON
M6A 1C3
The MHSO began in the 1970s and has amassed a collection of over 9000 hours or oral histories with a focus on migration, ethnicity and indigeneity in Ontario, many from the Scarborough area. Many UTSC students have assisted in the enhancement of this collection providing transcription, translation and context research for individual oral histories. The MHSO also provides educational programming and training for those interested in the method and practice of oral history research.
Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling
From their website: The Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling was founded in 2006 by the then Canada Research Chair in Oral History, Dr Steven High, with funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and Concordia University. COHDS moved into permanent facilities on Concordia’s downtown Montreal campus in 2007. Our central mission is to support the gathering and preservation of the audiovisual oral history record, while encouraging solo, collaborative, and community-based research and creation that respond to living memory and oral testimony. Ethics and shared authority are at the core of our values as a university research centre.
The COHDS website provides many resources helpful to those interested in exploring the method and practice of oral history research: https://storytelling.concordia.ca/resources/
The OHA is a United States based association made up of scholars and others interested in the method and practice of oral history. In addition to being an membership organization, the OHA provides a wealth of resources/guides on the “how to” and best practices of oral history.
