Jennifer, who attended Scarborough College in the 1970s, looks back on the colonial connection that brought different members of the early College community together: cricket.

[Jennifer:] But one of the interesting things about spring here is every year, every spring, somebody would start a cricket game.

And of course, as I said before, a number of geography professors were British, from Peter Cave to Michael Bunce, who, I think he’s just retired.

[Ahmed:] He retired yeah, six years ago. Ted Ralph, maybe, Edward Ralph.

[Jennifer:] Every April you could tell the students who had British background. The Caribbean students, of course, were British. Until Independence, then they became whatever the countries became.

So cricket was the sport of the Caribbean for the Caribbean students, but then you can tell who was English because they definitely joined the game. You could tell where they came from. You could tell who was Irish, you could tell who was anything because they couldn’t resist the cricket game.

They would see the game going on. Make a beeline to the game. Next thing you know, you got a cricket game going.
