Will Kwan, a UTSC alum and current UTSC faculty member in the Department of Arts, Culture, and Media, discusses his rationale for attending UTSC and an undergraduate student and describes the Arts Management program as a unique opportunity to explore his artistic creativity while building practical transferable skills.

I applied to UTSC because of the Arts Management program,

which, the program, it wasn’t really offered anywhere else in Toronto. And, I’ve come from an immigrant background and it’s quite common, it’s part of the immigrant narrative

that you study things that are practical to help you to get a job and to build a life. So I mean, I was kind of subject to that narrative as well.

So, the Arts Management program was this program that allowed me to study art and have some dimension of my studies that were practical.

I should say, I should go back and say that in high school, I was very interested in art. And, so I was doing a lot of, I was doing a lot of artwork in high school and I knew that I wanted to study art in some capacity,

but to go to an art school like OCAD [Ontario College of Art and Design], it was somehow a bit too radical for me. And I don’t know how much my parents factored into it,

but, for me, it was still somehow pretty radical to just study that without any clear idea of prospects for what I would do afterwards.
